Pending project name change of NAS4Free!

#1

Post by zoon01 » 05 Jul 2018 17:21

Hi to all users and team members of NAS4Free.

Again a big change is happening with our project NAS4Free.

As some do know we are working on the trademark for our project.
However we faced some difficulties as we tried to trademark NAS4Free as name.
To our surprise they came back to us with the following message:

The trademark NAS4Free as mark could be merely descriptive!
NAS4Free is an alternate spelling of “NAS FOR FREE” for what one assumes is network attached storage services provided for free.
As such, there is a significant risk that this trademark would be found descriptive and registration fails.

For that reason and this reason alone, to avoid troubles and high cost
we came up with a new name and that name is now far in trademark progress.

We are now ready and in progress to switch NAS4Free into it's new name XigmaNAS
We will perform a name change on Sourceforge to keep the svn and commits in sync.

Thank you for your help and understanding,

Update:
The uspto has tighten the rules and requirements some time ago so that nowadays
FreeBSD, FreeNAS to name a few you know, would face the same problem if their marks did not exist yet!

update2:
XigmaNAS is Registered Sep. 11, 2018

Donations are now really more than welcome as we have not covered all the costs yet!

Regards,
The NAS4Free Team

At this stage we did complete the rename of Sourceforge project NAS4Free into XigmaNAS.
Tickets and svn are not lost, rename files in trunk on svn is now in progress.

very soon webpages will follow, no timeframe for this yet!

Hello team-

Great progress on the rename (and toward 11.2!)

Is there a repository (svn, git) of the html for nas4free.org so we can help? Also, will there be a non-destructive way to rename the forum? I was a lurker when the break from freenas happened.. forgive my naivete / ignorance.

Don't know what you like to search? maybe you can be a bit descriptive.
Yes we have to change our name for proper protection of our brand,
the domain is needed as nas4free domains will soon forward to xigmanas.com, problem resolved i think.
It takes time to get used to it, in the end it will.

Hey zoon,

Just a suggestion.

Probably could do a 301 redirect from http://forums.nas4free.org to http://xigmanas.com/forums with the URI ?
It would probably help with the SEO of the new domain and lets Google and other search engines index the new xigmanas.com domain as well.

It's somewhat annoying when the old links on Google or where-ever else don't work and have to be manually changed to the new domain to work.

If using Apache, the .htaccess rewrite rules are something like to redirect automatically from forums.nas4free.org with the URI behind:

Code: Select all

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^forums.nas4free.org [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://xigmanas.com/forums/$1 [L,R=301,NC]

I like the use of the Greek flavour, but I wonder what the attraction of ΞΣNAS was? Does the Xi Sigma stand for something?

Why not go with "OmegaNAS, The Last Word In Storage"? Was it already trademarked?
  • Omega is the last letter, just like Z in ZFS
  • Ohms are the unit of resistance; in this case, the resistance against closed source, proprietary, commercial software
  • The Ω glyph would integrate well with an icon of a disk, possibly a pie-chart displaying usage
  • With a little artistic licence it could be stylised Oh Mega NAS to emphasise capacity.

https://www.nas4free.org goes to the old homepage. Any DNS changes should have worked through by now so I think it's safe to say there's no re-direct.

https://www.nas4free.com just times out.

https://www.xigmanas.org gives a security error:
"xigmanas.org uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is only valid for d240.1eurohosting.nl.

And just to add to the above, whoever thought that dark blue text on black was a good idea for the links on https://www.xigmanas.com needs a thorough beating.

indeed, main page no redirect yet

(https://www.nas4free.com just times out.)
We never owned this domain, this is the exact reason we needed to trademark our name!
The owner nas4free.com forwards it to freenas.org.

Update:
The main weppage transformation is in progress too, but require some time to finish.
https://www.xigmanas.com/

Our Twitter page is now online to replace twitter n4f:

https://twitter.com/XigmaNAS

To bad we have some sad news for our facebook users:
nas4free facebook gets closed, no new xigmanas facebook will be created.
The decision follows a court ruling which states administrators of Facebook pages share responsibility with Facebook in complying with the GDPR.

Trademarking process comes to an end now :P

The USPTO has accepted the Statement of Use filed for the trademark application XigmaNAS. The mark will now register and the registration certificate will issue in due course barring any extraordinary circumstances.

This registration will happening but can take 2 months in worse case, but we think next month it will be completed.

Well,

I guess welcome to the trademark restrictions. A lot of confusion has been caused by such trademarks as "network file system" and "windows".

Sucks for us though.

Great job on the descriptive process and gambatte kudasai.

This simply isn't going to happen. For example, I've recommended N4F over FreeNAS, Unraid, Openmedia vault, etc. in many posts on forums.overclockers.co.uk. I think I've always pointed to the domain which will get redirected but I'm not going to trawl through years of posts to find the references and check!

Thanks a lot for all of this that you all do. For real. XigmaNAS is the best NAS out there. I just wish you had IOTA as a means for accepting donations....and not only that, It would be awesome if you, somehow, start integrating XigmaNAS data management with the Tangle. I really hope you will forsee the potential for all of this. Greetings from Buenos Aires.
